Fearless Karaoke

“Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear.” ~ Ambrose Redmoon

Fearless Karaoke

Standing up.

Being in the moment, joyfully.

Accepting your imperfections without judgement.

Accepting that judgement from other people is out of your control.

Allowing yourself to focus on the fun of doing something instead of the getting it right.

Making this fun you feel a more important measure of success than the criticism you hear from other people.

Actively turning down (or off) the voices that are judging you, measuring you up or putting you down.

Make your desire to enjoy yourself more powerful than your fear of being judged.

Accepting that competency does not equal success – but enthusiasm and passion make it more likely.

All things being equal, it will never be as good as it can be if you’re not having fun doing it.

This is Fearless Karaoke – two words that describe just what it means to Sing Your Truth.

I want to thank you for being here and wanting to pursue a life more in line with who you are. My mission is to help you and support you to do this easier, faster and more enjoyably.

To celebrate the launch of SingYourTruth.com, I created a video.

How was the Fearless Karaoke video made?

I put out a call for contributions via The Tiny Soprano, as well as individually approaching a small number of bloggers and mischief-makers who I thought would be up for taking part. I had a great response, and the videos started arriving within a day or two of putting out the call. Life kept getting in the way of a number of people who wanted to take part and couldn’t make a video in time – but we received enough fantastic contributions to really put together something we thought would be pretty cool.

My husband Antonio fiercely jumped in at the deep end with the editing and the audio mix – a massive challenge for us with 12 singers, 2 of these only audios from people who couldn’t send pictures. It was his first editing job and I think he did an incredible job in 3 days with absolutely no sleep. (And work and three kids.)

Fun Backstage Trivia

Erica Swanson couldn’t get her dastardly web cam working, so she was only able to send me a short clip of her singing the intro to the song. (And what a voice. *dreamy sigh*) So I came up with the mobile phone moment – which may or may not be really cheesy. Well I liked it, anyway.

The Confused Johnny moment came about because he really wanted to be in the vid but didn’t like Queen, so he chose his own karaoke moment for us to play with.

I had an unexpected late entry from James Chartrand from Men With Pens who experienced a surge of fuck-it courage and sent me a short audio at the last minute. (This is why it appears where it does – keep watching until towards the end and you’ll see.) Apparently much alcohol was consumed, but the end result clearly shows that James is disgustingly multi-talented and can rock way more than just his Pen.

You can see a full list of everyone involved with links to their websites where you can get to know them more. You can find them all here on Twitter too.

Ultimately, I was blown away by the courage, the craziness and the infectious enthusiasm of all of the people involved in this video. I knew some of them were feeling awkward and embarrassed but they still did it anyway.

Which was totally the whole point.

Kirsty Hall (my lovely Bristol-based karaoke star who swigs sweetly from a Magners pint glass in the closing credits) unwittingly summed the process up beautifully in her email to me (when she sent me another song she had recorded after the Queen – she was all fired up!) She wrote:

“I like the point in the video where you can see the song take me.

Yes!! Isn’t this what it’s all about?

So I encourage you to learn to listen to the voices inside, and turn up the one that makes you feel the most alive.

This is your song.

Then practice living your life your way, singing this song.

Letting the song take you.

You HAVE to sing more…I have some more crazy stuff a-brewin. Thinking duets, baby. Duets.

That was so freakin’ awesome, I have no words. Brava!

You have the best air drumming ever. And your hair brush swish right at the very end was like a dance move….loved it!

Catherine Caine July 22, 2010 at 7:29 am

I’m so sad that the microphone on the Flipcam is so QUIET. My over-the-top belting really became all teeny. :)

So proud of you, and this is the Best Launch Ever. :)

Kirsty Hall July 22, 2010 at 8:09 am

Mine was just recorded on my Flipcam too Catherine but it came out a bit louder. I think I might have had it closer to me though. I really ought to get a microphone.

Melinda | SuperWAHM July 22, 2010 at 8:26 am

That’s why I bought the Zi8, because it has a mic input. Not that it worked for this, which is why mine is so soft as well.

Loved your over-the-top belting!

Reply

Catherine Caine July 22, 2010 at 11:53 am

I wish I’d gone with the Zi8 too. Ah well. :)

Awesome, embarrassing, hysterically funny, all at the same time. Thanks for the opportunity Natalie!

It’s beautiful to see a project that honors the experience of ‘just singing’…your heart out, without getting caught up in perfection. Congratulations Natalie :)

Reply

Natalie Peluso July 21, 2010 at 11:12 pm

Thanks Amy – this is exactly what I wanted. And I’m a little in awe of the flashes of brilliance in this video – where the singing just connects to the inside of each person for a moment of perfection that doesn’t depend on technique or intonation. Just being in the moment.

Reply

James Chartrand - Men with Pens July 22, 2010 at 10:28 am

Good. You know there’s nothing I like better than a spotlight, and I’ll drink less this time before grabbing the mic. Oh, and throw the kids out of the house. Oh, and have more coffee. Oh, and actually get the software to work right. Oh, and… and… yeah.

Reply

James Chartrand - Men with Pens July 22, 2010 at 10:29 am

Side note. If Johnny and I can do this, then I think you need to launch a big-name challenge and grab all the wusses out there. Start with that Dunford woman. :P

Catherine Caine July 22, 2010 at 11:55 am

Skip the coffee, it makes your larynx all dehydrated. :)

Natalie Peluso July 23, 2010 at 9:42 am

I’m on it – #2 is aleady playing in my head.

Voice tip: coffee is cool (and in my case necessary for basic functioning) just make sure you are drinking enough water in general. Most people don’t drink nearly enough water. You’ll never see an opera singer without a 2 litre bottle of water on them. During some shows I’d get through 3 litres easily. And pee a lot. Which is really hard when you’re in a pre-French revolution frock complete with corset, bum-pad (bustle thingy) and hoop petticoat. Try THAT in a hurry.

Kirsty Hall July 21, 2010 at 10:03 pm

That was so awesome, sweet and funny – a huge ‘well done’ to my fellow crazy karaoke-ers. You did a great job on the editing, Natalie and Antonio. Congrats on the site launch.

Nested comments FAIL!

@Catherine/Natalie – I agree with the water thing. When we did the June production, we sang nearly three hours a night, four times a week, for three weeks in a row. The stage had a small section full of water bottles hidden away and we’d slug ‘em back like there was no tomorrow.
